Yeah, I think there is a balance to be had here. You give the reader just enough info/detail to make them think you have ALL the info/details, but not so much that they become lost or distracted by the details. Then again, I guess some of this might depend upon the target readership. nondisclosed_email@example.com (OldWarrior)Fri, 24 Jul 2015 23:18:47 +0000 Re: How technical do you get?https://bthescribesmessageboard.runboard.com/p94,from=rss#post94https://bthescribesmessageboard.runboard.com/p94,from=rss#post94So I don't have to really create blueprints for the first starship as long as there is a nice atmosphere to the story?!? nondisclosed_email@example.com (Pastor Rick)Sat, 01 Dec 2012 10:14:00 +0000 Re: How technical do you get?https://bthescribesmessageboard.runboard.com/p54,from=rss#post54https://bthescribesmessageboard.runboard.com/p54,from=rss#post54I think a good writer has a blend of everything together, but knows how to craft it in a way that cannot be reproduced, and that has meaning to both the author and the reader. There has to be a connection somewhere in the first few pages.nondisclosed_email@example.com (bvr)Thu, 26 Jan 2012 10:46:39 +0000 Re: How technical do you get?https://bthescribesmessageboard.runboard.com/p49,from=rss#post49https://bthescribesmessageboard.runboard.com/p49,from=rss#post49I prefer they stick mostly to the story, but I think a little bit of techno-jargon, or whatever, is good for giving some atmosphere to the story. Sort of like seeing the lights, switches, buttons, and hearing the futuristic sounds on Star Trek or in a STAR WARS movie. nondisclosed_email@example.com (OldWarrior)Sat, 21 Jan 2012 02:34:27 +0000 Re: How technical do you get?https://bthescribesmessageboard.runboard.com/p43,from=rss#post43https://bthescribesmessageboard.runboard.com/p43,from=rss#post43Straight up story for me, unless it's critical information. I don't like numbers in books, in my opinion makes it too much like a status report, but that's just my opinion of course. Then again, I've only written one book that actually sits in between sci-fi/horror, so it's not really dedicated die-hard sci-fi...nondisclosed_email@example.com (Joost)Tue, 15 Nov 2011 10:48:21 +0000 How technical do you get?https://bthescribesmessageboard.runboard.com/p31,from=rss#post31https://bthescribesmessageboard.runboard.com/p31,from=rss#post31I was just curious... how technical do you get when describing a sci-fi concept like a "warp drive?" Do you appreciate authors that go into great detail or would you rather they skip the "techno-babble" and go straight to the story?nondisclosed_email@example.com (Pastor Rick)Tue, 23 Aug 2011 20:56:20 +0000
