How to Write a Novel - A Guide

Develop your world:

Many writer's think that when starting a new novel, you must start with the plot. There is no right or wrong way to go about it, you just need to do what works for you.

I think it makes sense to start off building your world, then your characters, and after you have them laid out..then you can start making things happen and develop your plot.

World Building:

So we want to create a world? How different is this world from the world we live in? What creatures roam the lands, or whats the weather like? These are questions you need to answer.
First, we are going to answer some questions about our world, and keep them in a folder that we will call our "Story Journal" where you will store all your papers relating to your novel.

Your World:

1: Where is your world located?

2: What is your climate like? Seasons?

3: What plants or animals will you find on this world?

4: How big is your world? Are there communities, villages, or cities?

5: What clothing does your characters wear?

6: Does your world have religions, governments?

7: What is your world's currency? Gold, bartering?

The goal is to describe your world the best you can, and make it believable. If your world and government doesn't make sense, it won't work.

It might help to draw a rough map of your world, and label all locations. Don't forget to include bodies of water, mountains, and villages or towns.

Creating Characters:

Creating memorable characters that drive the story is another important element in story writing. Your characters will cry, laugh, and get angry. Characters in your story will need to develop, and grow throughout your story, making all kinds of mistakes on the way.

Character Profile:
Your character profile will tell you everything you need to know about your characters. Don't just do a profile for your important characters, do it for all of them! You never know when one of your common characters, or 'extras' will become a larger part of your story.

Follow the character profile listed below to create all of your characters.

1) Character Name:
2) Character Gender:
3) Date of Birth:
4) Sexuality:
5) Height:
6) Weight:
7) Eye Color:
8) Body Type:
9) Education:
10) Employment
11)
